Marketlink's EPIC Software Helps Hospital Take on SARS
July 10, 2003, Toronto - At the height of the SARS outbreak, St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto turned to Marketlink to help them develop a system that would keep potentially infected staff from entering the premises. Additionally, the system saved the healthcare facility time by reducing the entrance procedure to a couple of seconds from 5-6 minutes.
Hospital workers were initially required to fill out detailed paper forms when entering and exiting the hospital, resulting in long delays and considerable frustration. Additionally, it would have been inconvenient for the hospital to search for specific documents since the paper-based solution would have generated thousands of files.
With Marketlink's EPIC software, after reading a brief questionnaire, users swipe a personalized bar code past a scanner, bringing up a profile that they can update on the spot. If there is a potential problem, the user can report to another station that will investigate the matter more fully.
EPIC not only safeguards against SARS, but can be used for other infectious diseases as well as keeping track of who is in the hospital and where, and even registering attendance for required training and seminars.
Sam Fielding, a Marketlink consultant who worked on the project notes, "The SARS crisis opened a lot of eyes to the vulnerability of our hospitals. This application can help make them a lot safer."
